Mississippi Physical Therapy Continuing Education Requirements

Mississippi Physical therapy continuing education requirements

As a Physical Therapist in Mississippi, you must complete 30 continuing education hours every two years by June 30th. PTAs have the same Mississippi physical therapy continuing education requirements.

Whether you’re a PT or PTA, your renewal period is determined by your last name. If your surname begins with letters A–L, then you’ll renew biennially on odd-numbered years; if it begins with M–Z, then renew biennially on even-numbered years.

Of the required 30, at least 7.5 CEUs must be directly related to physical therapy practice, and at least 3 CEUs must be directly related to ethics, professionalism, or jurisprudence.

Mississippi Physical Therapy CEU Requirements

From the Mississippi Physical Therapy Practice Act Website:

“Regulations set the requirement of 30 continuing competence units (CCU) to be accrued during each 2 year licensing period (July 1 – June 30). No carryover of continuing competence units from one licensure period to another shall be allowed. At least 25 percent (7.5 CCU) of the required continuing competence units earned during each licensure period must be directly related to the clinical practice of physical therapy. Continuing Competence (CC) activities claimed as clinical are subject to review if considered questionable.

“All licensees must take three (3) hours of study in ethics, professionalism, or jurisprudence per licensing period as part of their total CC requirements. At least 15 of the 30 required continuing competence units must be from Certified Activities.”

What CEU Courses are Allowed in Mississippi?

To qualify towards your CEU requirement, courses must be related to physical therapy and be either 1) approved or 2) certified for continuing education in Mississippi.

1) Certified activities undergo more rigorous verification, and therefore must make up at least 15 hours of your continued competency. Below are some examples:

  • Courses, conferences and activities that meet the Standards of Continuing Competence (SCC) as set forth by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT)
  • Courses, conferences and activities provided by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Mississippi Physical Therapy Association (MSPTA), and other state chapters and sections of APTA
  • Educational programs given and approved by accredited universities
  • Attendance at educational programs given and approved by the Mississippi State Board of Physical Therapy
  • Graduate-level academic coursework from a regionally accredited college or university
  • An APTA-credentialed fellowship or residency
  • Exams and assessments, such as ABPTS certification, PTA advanced proficiency certification, and the FSBPT Practice Review Tool

2) Approved activities are harder to verify and therefore can make up no more than 15 contact hours of CEU credit. They may include the following types of activities:

  • Self-study
  • Attendance at in-service programs pertaining to clinical concepts, safety training, or governmental regulatory training
  • Presentations made before physical therapists or other health care professionals and directly related to the profession of physical therapy
  • Research and professional publication
  • Clinical Instructorship
  • Board and committee work
  • Structured Interactive Study (i.e. group study, journal club)
  • Formal mentorship
  • Courses, conferences, and activities that do not meet the criteria outlined for certified activities
  • Residences and fellowships that do not meet the criteria outlined for certified activities

You can apply for prior approval of a CEU course by filling out this form and paying the $50 fee.

If you’re unsure whether a course or activity qualifies for continuing education,  whether approved or certified, contact the Board.
